The ancient history of Chinese makeup started over 11,000 years ago can you believe! One of the main features of makeup in Ancient China would be their eyebrows. They have always been an essential part recognised in makeup.   In In 2c BCE, eyebrows had sharp, pointed tops. In 2c A.D., eyebrows were gently curved.

In replace of foundation in China they used rice flower on their face to make it white . This was used by men and women would you believe. In addition to this they also darken their eyebrows. They darkening of the eyebrow was like filling them in today. the contrast of black and white pleased the Chinese as it looked like drawing on the face.

During the times of the Han, a new product was introduced. This was know as rouge which today we would refer to as lipstick. The rouge was look upon as a drawing tool and was used to make different shapes on the lips such as hearts, flowers , circles and much more.

During Tang times, people carried small makeup boxes which contained a mirror, rouge, and a lipstick. Men wore their hair in top knots which was when they shaved their whole head except the top and then wrapped them into buns or a "knot". To keeps these knots in place they used gold hair clips. The eyebrow shape changed in the T'ang times where the eyebrows were shaped liken mountains.
